Dossier 'EU Interreg-project - RAINBOW'
Coördinatie Zenne neemt de komende jaren deel aan het Europese Interreg-project RAINBOW, dat staat voor 'Restoring Aquifers by Integrating National and Border-crossing Operational Watermanagement'. Het EU-project heeft tot doel de bodem in stedelijke gebieden te versterken als gezonde buffer in de waterkringloop die de grondwaterniveaus stabiliseert en op termijn zelfs aanvult. Aanleiding hiervoor zijn de door de klimaatverandering toenemende droogteperiodes en hevige regenval. Daarom testen we de principes van de ‘sponsstad’ om de dalende grondwaterspiegel te verhogen, verontreiniging van grondwater te voorkomen en op lange termijn een basis te creëren voor blauwgroene infrastructuren.
Coördinatie Zenne zal rechtstreeks samenwerken met de Stad Brussel en de Faculteit Architectuur van de ULB. We zetten een reeks interactieve sensibiliseringsactiviteiten op poten in de Brusselse projectzones en nemen daarnaast deel in de kennisdeling tussen de deelnemende partners over het betrekken van burgers in de transitie naar de sponsstad.
Het totale budget van het EU-project bedraagt € 5,7 miljoen; voor Coördinatie Zenne wordt een projectbudget van € 38.220 euro voorzien. Hiervan wordt 60% medegefinancierd door het Interreg North-West Europe-programma 2021–2027 van de Europese Unie. Het project zal naar verwachting in de zomer van 2029 worden afgerond.

In the coming years, Coordination Senne will participate in the European Interreg project RAINBOW, which stands for 'Restoring Aquifers by Integrating National and Cross-border Operational Water Management'. The EU project aims to strengthen the soil in urban areas as a healthy buffer in the water cycle that stabilizes groundwater levels and, in the long term, even replenishes them. This initiative is driven by the increasing periods of drought and heavy rainfall caused by climate change. That is why we are testing the principles of the 'sponge city' to raise the falling groundwater table, prevent groundwater contamination, and create a foundation for blue-green infrastructure in the long term.
Coordination Senne will collaborate directly with the City of Brussels and the Faculty of Architecture at the ULB. We are organizing a series of interactive awareness-raising activities in the Brussels project zones and are also participating in knowledge-sharing among the participating partners regarding citizen involvement in the sponge city transition.
The total budget for the EU project is €5.7 million; a project budget of €38,220 is allocated to Coordination Senne. Of this amount, 60% is co-financed by the European Union’s Interreg North-West Europe Program 2021–2027. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2029.
